Former Harvard University president Larry Summers has stepped down following revelations that he had been in close contact with convicted pedophile Jeffery Epstein prior to his alleged death.

“I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognise the pain they have caused,” he wrote in a statement.

US House members are expected to vote on a measure calling for the release of all Epstein-related files that have yet to be made public.

Emails released by a House committee last week show Summers, a former US treasury secretary, communicated with Epstein until the day before the Epstein’s 2019 arrest for the alleged sex trafficking of minors.

Trump, a populist who frequently railed against “elites,” “globalists,” and “woke” institutions, consistently positioned universities like Harvard as prime targets of his anti-establishment rhetoric, accusing them of progressive bias and being out of touch with mainstream America.

Conversely, Harvard, a bastion of liberal academia and often seen as a symbol of the intellectual establishment, largely viewed Trump and his policies with alarm, drawing outspoken opposition from its faculty, students, and alumni.

Trump threatened to pull funding and Harvard bowed, something many critics noted the school had no obligation to do so.

But following the newest allegations of Summers’ impropriety, it all starts to make sense to why Harvard didn’t want to get on the bad side of Trump.
