Bangladesh–India relations have become increasingly strained in recent months following political upheaval in Bangladesh and a growing sense of mistrust between Dhaka and New Delhi. Tensions escalated after the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had maintained close ties with India, leaving India uncertain about the direction of Bangladesh’s new political leadership and its regional alignment.

Diplomatic friction has surfaced through sharp exchanges, the summoning of envoys, and disruptions to visa and consular services, which have affected travel, trade, and people-to-people ties. India has raised concerns about political instability and security along the shared border, while Bangladesh has pushed back against what it views as Indian overreach and interference in its internal affairs.

Border management and migration issues remain a persistent source of strain, with both sides accusing the other of failing to adequately control cross-border movement and crime. Public sentiment in Bangladesh has also grown more critical of India, fueled by nationalist rhetoric and debates over sovereignty, trade imbalances, and water-sharing agreements.

Despite the cooling relationship, leaders in Dhaka have emphasized that they do not want permanently hostile ties with their largest neighbor. Both governments have signaled interest in preventing a full diplomatic rupture, but relations remain fragile as South Asia watches whether cooperation or further confrontation will define the next phase of Bangladesh–India relations.
