On Thursday afternoon in Portland, Oregon, two people were shot and wounded in an incident involving U.S. federal law enforcement agents, officials confirmed. The Portland Police Bureau said officers responded around 2:15 p.m. to reports of a shooting in the city’s Hazelwood neighborhood and later determined the shots were fired by federal agents, not local police. The victims — a man and a woman — were found with gunshot wounds and taken to a hospital. Their conditions have not been publicly released.

Federal authorities later acknowledged the agents involved were from Customs and Border Protection. Initial statements about the incident were briefly posted and then removed, fueling criticism from local officials. Portland leaders and Oregon state authorities condemned the shooting, demanding answers and calling for federal immigration operations in the city to be halted while investigations move forward.

The incident comes amid heightened national scrutiny of federal law enforcement after another shooting involving immigration agents in Minneapolis the previous day. Civil rights groups warned that the back-to-back incidents risk escalating public distrust and could intensify protests in cities where federal agents are operating.
