Eight senate Democrats have voted with Republicans to end the US shutdown, however critics from both sides are beside themselves.

Not only is the Republican’s new budget set to pass now in less than a week, with a clear Republican majority in both chambers there is no way for the Dems to guarantee a vote in December for the healthcare subsides, meaning the eight Dems who broke essentially did so with no real guarantees for their voters.

The Dems were holding out against a new Republican budget for 2026 that will eliminate Obama care subsidies for millions of low income Americans and tax breaks for the top 4% of income earners for over 40 days making this the longest shutdown in American history.

However, after a month of telling constituencies how the Democratic party “must fight”, nearly a tenth of the senatorial Democratic caucus broke from their own party’s line and capitulated to Republicans, with no leverage to boot.

Dems wanted to protect Obamacare subsides and stop the tax incentives for wealthy individuals in the Republican’s new budget, but they got neither.

The Democrats who voted with Republicans to give tax cuts and raise healthcare cost include

  • Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire
  • Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois
  • Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia
  • Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire
  • Senator Angus King of Maine, an independent who caucuses with Democrats
  • Senator Jacky Rosen of Nevada
  • Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada
  • Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania

All of these senators are up for reelection within next 3 year, and will surely have to defend their questionable action to their own voters.
