Four years ago, Donald Trump and his Republican allies boasted about “historic lows” in Black unemployment, shamelessly peddling the illusion that their policies were lifting up Black America. Today, the facade has crumbled, Black unemployment now sits at nearly 9%, nearly double the national average, a damning indictment of their indifference and failed leadership.
Rather than addressing systemic barriers, the Republican Party has actively targeted Black workers, undermining labor protections, opposing living wage laws, and gutting social programs that help bridge economic gaps. The Trump administration’s hollow rhetoric about “opportunity zones” proved to be little more than a tax giveaway for wealthy developers, while Black communities saw no real investment. Meanwhile, GOP-led states have waged war on voting rights, making it harder for Black Americans to hold leaders accountable.
The irony? Republicans are handing Democrats a political gift. While Democrats have their own checkered history of failing Black voters, the GOP’s blatant neglect makes it painfully easy for them to campaign on promises of economic justice. Republicans had a chance to prove they cared—instead, they proved they only care about exploiting Black voters for photo ops while doing nothing to dismantle the policies that keep them struggling.
If Republicans wonder why Black voters overwhelmingly reject them, they need only look at their own record: empty promises, broken policies, and a callous disregard for Black workers. The GOP didn’t just fail—they didn’t even try.
