A tragedy unfolding in Mississippi is raising painful questions about police use of force, the value of human life, and whether a reported shoplifting incident should ever end with a child dead.
On June 14, law enforcement officers responded to a reported shoplifting call at a Walmart in Senatobia, Mississippi. What happened next has left a family shattered and an entire community searching for answers. .
According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, officers encountered two adults and a 1-year-old child entering a vehicle after leaving the store. Authorities say officers attempted to stop the vehicle and that the driver allegedly drove toward officers, nearly striking one of them. Officer Hunter Foster then opened fire on the vehicle.

Inside that vehicle was 1-year-old Kohen Wiley.

By the time the vehicle reached a nearby hospital, the toddler was dead. Another adult occupant suffered critical injuries. No officers were reported seriously injured.
For Kohen’s family, official statements have done little to ease the pain.
Family members say they are struggling to understand how a response to an alleged retail theft escalated into a shooting that left a baby dead. Relatives have publicly demanded transparency, accountability, and a full investigation into the actions of every officer involved.
The incident has ignited outrage far beyond Senatobia. Across social media, many Americans are asking a simple question: How does a shoplifting call end with bullets flying into a vehicle containing a child?
Supporters of the officers argue that investigators must determine whether an officer faced an immediate threat if a vehicle was allegedly driven toward law enforcement personnel. Critics counter that once officers knew a child was inside the vehicle, every possible effort should have been made to avoid deadly force unless there was no other option.
Those questions now sit at the center of an investigation that could have major implications for police accountability in Mississippi.
For Kohen’s grandfather, the loss is impossible to measure. The child was described as happy, energetic, and just beginning life’s journey. That journey ended before it truly had a chance to begin.
The Senatobia Police Department and the Tate County Sheriff’s Office have come under intense scrutiny as investigators work to determine exactly what happened in the moments before shots were fired. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry and is expected to present its findings to state authorities once completed.
Meanwhile, a grieving family waits.
A child is dead. A woman remains seriously injured. A community is demanding answers.
And one question continues to echo across Mississippi:
Was there any outcome worth the loss of a 1-year-old life?
