A Walmart store in this small Mississippi town became the center of a heated protest this week as members of the Hebrew Israelite movement staged a demonstration, effectively shutting down operations for several hours.

The protest was sparked by outrage over the police shooting of a one-year-old boy in the area, a tragedy that has reignited tensions between law enforcement and Black activist groups.

The Incident That Sparked the Protest

On June 19th, 2026, when officers responded to a domestic disturbance call. In what authorities later called a “tragic accident,” a stray bullet struck and killed a toddler inside a nearby home. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the case, but local activists, including Hebrew Israelites, have condemned the police response as negligent and racially charged.

Hebrew Israelites Take a Stand

Video footage from the scene shows Hebrew Israelites, dressed in their signature robes and head coverings, chanting and blocking Walmart entrances while demanding justice for the child. Their presence drew mixed reactions, some shoppers left in frustration, while others joined in solidarity.

“We will not be silent while our children are murdered,” declared one protester, echoing sentiments shared by many in the crowd. Walmart corporate later released a statement acknowledging the disruption but emphasized support for peaceful demonstrations.

Community Reactions

Local officials have urged calm, but tensions remain high. Some residents accuse the Hebrew Israelites of being disruptive, while others argue their protest highlights a critical issue: the lack of accountability in police-involved shootings, particularly in Black communities.

As investigations continue, Senatobia finds itself at the crossroads of grief, activism, and a demand for systemic change.
