The mysterious death of 21-year-old Justice Kai James at the Turner Job Corps Center has shaken the Albany community and ignited growing calls for transparency as investigators continue to examine what police have officially classified as a suspicious death.

Justice Kai James, a student enrolled at Turner Job Corps, was found unconscious outside the campus cafeteria on the evening of June 21. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. From the outset, the Albany Police Department classified the incident as suspicious, and authorities say that designation will remain until the investigation is complete.

For James’ family, the uncertainty surrounding his death has been almost as painful as the loss itself.

His aunt, Chasity James, described him as a young man who was determined to improve his future. After earning his high school diploma and completing a culinary program through Job Corps, Justice had returned to pursue an additional trade certification while working toward new career opportunities.

“He was really trying to better himself,” she told local media, describing him as outgoing, energetic, and deeply loved by his family.

Instead of receiving clear answers, however, the family says they have found themselves caught between multiple agencies.

According to relatives, requests to review surveillance footage have been met with conflicting responses regarding who controls the video evidence. Family members also say they have struggled to obtain detailed information about the circumstances leading to Justice’s death while the investigation remains active.

The case has also generated significant attention among students at Turner Job Corps.

In the days following James’ death, students organized demonstrations demanding accountability and expressing concerns about campus safety. Social media has been flooded with speculation about what may have occurred, prompting Albany Police Chief Michael Persley to publicly urge residents not to spread unverified rumors while detectives continue their work.

During a recent media briefing, Chief Persley confirmed that investigators interviewed an individual who had been identified through online speculation as a possible person of interest. After interviewing that individual and several others, investigators determined there was no concrete evidence connecting them to Justice’s death at this stage of the investigation. Police also confirmed that surveillance video has been obtained and continues to be reviewed as part of the case.

Authorities further stated that initial toxicology findings detected marijuana but no other narcotics during preliminary testing. Officials emphasized that additional forensic testing remains ongoing and cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is complete.

For the James family, those updates have done little to ease their concerns.

Relatives have questioned how Justice came to be alone outside after curfew and have called for a full accounting of campus security procedures, surveillance systems, and staff response. They say students have shared varying accounts of the night’s events, making a thorough and transparent investigation all the more important.

The tragedy has also placed renewed attention on Turner Job Corps itself.

Following the incident, the U.S. Department of Labor announced it is reviewing safety, security, and student accountability procedures at the Albany campus while local authorities continue their criminal investigation.

Justice Kai James’ death has become more than a single criminal investigation. It has evolved into a broader conversation about institutional accountability, campus safety, and the responsibility public programs have to protect the young people entrusted to their care.

As investigators continue to gather evidence, James’ family says their focus remains unchanged.

They are not asking for speculation or rumors.

They are asking for answers.
