Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has spent years dominating movie screens, but these days he’s building something potentially bigger than his acting career: Seven Bucks Productions.
Founded by Johnson and Dany Garcia, Seven Bucks has quietly become a serious entertainment company, producing everything from blockbuster franchises to television and more experimental films. Its credits include Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level, Jungle Cruise, Black Adam, Red Notice, Young Rock, Ballers and DC League of Super-Pets.
Seven Bucks Has Become a Franchise Machine
The company’s biggest strength is straightforward: Seven Bucks knows how to make mainstream entertainment.
The Jumanji movies became enormous global hits, while Johnson’s collaborations with Netflix, Disney, Universal, Warner Bros. and other studios have given Seven Bucks a foothold throughout Hollywood.
And the company isn’t finished with Jumanji. Another installment is currently among Seven Bucks’ projects.
Then there’s Disney’s live-action Moana. Johnson returns as Maui, while Seven Bucks is producing alongside Disney and other partners. Considering how enormous the Moana brand has become, it’s another monster project for Johnson’s company.
The Rock Is Trying Something Different Too
Seven Bucks is also beginning to escape the formula of “The Rock + jungle + explosions = movie.”
Johnson’s dramatic turn as MMA fighter Mark Kerr in A24’s The Smashing Machine was a major departure from his usual blockbuster persona. Seven Bucks produced that film as well.
Johnson is continuing his relationship with director Benny Safdie on Lizard Music, another unconventional project being developed through Seven Bucks.
That could be where things become especially interesting.
Johnson already knows how to make popcorn movies. Seven Bucks now gives him the freedom to bounce between giant franchises and stranger projects that audiences might never expect from The Rock.
Seven Bucks Could Become Johnson’s Biggest Hollywood Legacy
Not every Seven Bucks movie has been a smash. Black Adam failed to launch the DC universe Johnson envisioned, while other projects have produced mixed commercial results.
But Hollywood power isn’t built by never missing.
It’s built by staying in the room.
Seven Bucks now has relationships across Disney, Sony, Netflix, Amazon MGM, Universal, Warner Bros. and A24. It has blockbuster franchises, television productions and original projects moving through development.
Dwayne Johnson entered Hollywood as a wrestler trying to become a movie star.
He became one of the biggest movie stars on Earth.
Now he’s attempting another transformation.
The Rock doesn’t just want to star in Hollywood’s movies anymore. He wants Seven Bucks to help make them.
