Shaquille O’Neal has collected NBA championships, an MVP award, business ventures and television gigs. Now the 7-foot-1 basketball legend can add one of the strangest titles yet to his résumé: honorary FBI Special Agent.

O’Neal received the distinction during the FBI National Academy’s Session 299 graduation ceremony in Quantico, Virginia, on September 17. FBI Director Kash Patel presented Shaq with the honor while recognizing his longtime support of law enforcement. The graduating session included 265 law-enforcement officials from around the country.

There is one important distinction: Shaq is an honorary special agent, not a sworn FBI special agent with federal investigative authority. The FBI National Academy is an advanced professional program for law-enforcement leaders, separate from the training used to prepare newly hired FBI special agents.

The honor isn’t completely out of left field. O’Neal has maintained ties to law enforcement for years, including serving in reserve-police roles in Miami Beach and Doral, Florida, and previously receiving an honorary U.S. Deputy Marshal title.

And Shaq couldn’t resist turning the ceremony into comedy. While addressing the graduates, he took a shot at longtime television partner Charles Barkley, joking that if the new graduates happened to see Barkley, they should “arrest him.”

From Shaq-Fu to Agent Shaq, O’Neal continues to build perhaps the most unpredictable post-basketball résumé in sports.
